Teeth Whitening in El Hamma – Gabès

Whitening lightens the natural shade of your teeth using a peroxide-based gel applied under a dentist's supervision. It is not suitable for everyone and does not replace a scale and polish. Here is how to tell whether it suits you, and how it is carried out at our dental clinic in El Hamma.

Who is it for?

Whitening is for people whose teeth have yellowed or darkened over time, or with coffee, tea or smoking. It works well on yellow shades and less well on grey ones. Some deep discolouration, for example from medication taken in childhood or from a tooth that has had root canal treatment, responds poorly to standard whitening; other options exist, such as dental veneers.

Whitening is not recommended, or is postponed:

  • for children and teenagers whose teeth are not fully developed;
  • during pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • when there are cavities, inflamed gums or very sensitive teeth, which need treating first.

If stains come mostly from tartar, a scale and polish alone is sometimes enough to bring back a lighter shade.

How treatment works, step by step

1. Assessment and shade measurement

The dentist examines your teeth and gums, checks for cavities and notes any visible crowns or fillings. Your starting shade is measured and photographed so the result can be compared.

2. Scale and polish if needed

Cleaning before whitening helps the gel work evenly. If your gums bleed, they are treated first; see gum treatment.

3. Whitening

There are two methods, sometimes combined:

  • in the clinic: the gums are protected, then a gel is applied to the teeth during a session of about an hour;
  • at home: custom trays are made, and you wear them with a lower-strength gel on a set schedule for roughly one to two weeks.

Methods offered at our clinic: all the mentioned methods are used in our clinic.

4. Check-up

A follow-up visit measures the new shade, checks for sensitivity and, if needed, plans the replacement of visible fillings.

How many visits, and how long?

As a rough guide:

  • 1 assessment appointment, with a scale and polish if needed;
  • 1 in-clinic session, or 1 appointment to take impressions for the trays;
  • 1 check-up after 1 to 2 weeks.

The whole process usually takes 2 to 3 weeks.

Aftercare and advice

  • Sensitivity to cold is common for a few days; a toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help.
  • For 48 hours afterwards, cut down on coffee, tea, coloured fizzy drinks, harissa, tomato sauce and smoking.
  • Brush twice a day and have regular cleanings to maintain the result.
  • Do not use whitening products bought online without asking your dentist.

In our dental clinic in El Hamma

  • An assessment before any whitening, to check that your teeth and gums are ready.
  • Products used under the dentist's supervision, with a clear explanation of what to expect.
  • Other cosmetic options available if whitening alone is not enough.

Frequently asked questions

Does whitening damage tooth enamel?

Done with suitable products under a dentist's supervision, whitening does not destroy enamel. Temporary sensitivity is common. Highly concentrated products or abrasive methods sold outside dental clinics, on the other hand, can harm teeth and gums.

How long do the results last?

It varies from person to person: coffee, tea, smoking and some foods dull teeth faster. Occasional top-ups can be offered. No specific duration can be promised.

Will my crowns and fillings whiten too?

No. Crowns, veneers and tooth-coloured fillings keep their shade. If they are visible, they may need replacing after whitening so that your smile looks even.

Do baking soda or charcoal whiten teeth?

They can remove some surface stains, but they are abrasive and do not change the tooth's underlying colour. Used often, they can wear down enamel. It is better to ask your dentist.

Can I whiten my teeth during pregnancy?

As a precaution, whitening is postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
